i think now cancel culture is just used as an excuse to harass people. there are so many dangerous people who still have a platform but so many creators are cancelled and harassed for having a different opinion or even having a specific personality. remember the whole jellybean thing? people sent a 15 yr old death threats, leaked her info, fabricated racist dms and continuously mocked her just because she was "cringy" and everyone let that behavior slide
people shouldn't shun and harass others for having a different opinion for saying something 10 yrs ago, but instead we should have a civil conversation and try to educate those who are in the wrong. most of the time those people don't know that something they do/say is wrong or they were brainwashed by their parents/peers
if we just harass others for having different views we don't solve the problem but instead create walls between us and the others. both parties don't learn anything and still think that their opinion is the only absolute truth without even having the opportunity to learn and admit to their mistakes
the worst part is people who had radical views in the past who understood that what they believed was wrong and openly admitted to it, apologized and showed that they changed are still being harassed for their past. i know that you can still be wary of/dislike that person for what they did in the past but harassing them won't solve anything

Cancel culture is toxic. There are situations where it can be necessary (Shane Dawson for example), but for the most part, I feel as though everyone is getting canceled for everything. It is not good for people to use slurs, be homophobic/transphobic/etc. However, if your reasoning to cancel someone is a 10 year old tweet, or video made in 2009, I do feel as though if they simply apologize, they are off the hook. As long as it is genuine. Jenna Marbles is a good example of someone holding accountability for their actions. She apologized without even being told to.
The real reason I believe it is toxic is because we are being very picky and choosey with who we cancel. Not everything is black and white, and I don't think someone who said something racist in a video years ago should be put under the same umbrella as someone who is genuinely racist currently. We value authenticity, but we do not let people grow.

I so totally agree. Cancelling goes beyond “accountability.” I think the issue is the public holds celebrities to unrealistic standards sometimes. Imagine if someone you knew irl said a slur and gave a shitty apology, would you stop interacting with them? Sure. Would you convince your friends to stop interacting with them. Maybe. Would you and your friends go in swarms to harass them? No! And with enforceable crimes same thing, you’d report them to the police not get your friends together and bully them.

Cancel culture is something that has been on my mind for a while now. I feel like if a celeb, or some kind of an influencer does something that cancel culture doesn’t like, they all come together to harass them! Even if it’s for something that’s out of their control. That’s one way I think cancel culture works. Another way I think cancel culture goes, is that it just benefits the person who is getting cancelled! Which is definitely not as bad as harassing the celeb/influencer. An example of this is tana mongeau, I’m not good at explaining what she did exactly, or what’s going on with her. So I’m gonna link a video of a YouTuber, miiasaurous, talking about her .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12Iw00jEv-w&t=774s

I think cancel culture is very toxic (as tons of people have already said) and it always involves some sort of group, or more correctly, hate mob, attempting to take control of a certain influencer or generally just a famous person on the internet. Of course, this doesn't exclude regular people - I've seen so many cases of small creators getting harassed because of someone digging up crap about them years ago. The only acceptable reason to cancel someone is when it's someone who is problematic at the moment. Even then, so many biases play into cancel culture, as I believe this is currently happening with James Charles. People just... let him roam again freely. There's plenty people who make fun of him, but they do not actually do anything more than that. Though, actual child predators shouldn't just be cancelled, they should be put in jail and suffer the consequences of their stupidity.

Cancel culture can definitely be good, but most cases are people harassing a person for something they said/did a very long time ago. It feels as if a majority of people can't accept that a person can mature and grow up, learn from their past mistakes and never let it slip again. I believe if they've apologized properly, with or without people yelling at them about it, the decisions should be forgiven - however not forgotten.

I think the only time cancel culture is valid is when someone is like.. a rapist. if someone's just an asshole, all they're doing is saying bad shit, and i don't think that actually matters in the long run.

Cancel Culture does not work, It's just witch-hunting that results in poor mental health for both parties, the obsessed stalkers and the canceled victims. Hell, let's say they are a bad person who needs to be "punished by society" it still doesn't actually fix the problem, the influencers just lie and make a fake apology just to save their ass anyway. Sometimes they make a comeback and sometimes they don't, either way the process repeats itself anyway. Not to mention if you really wanted a person to take accountability and be better, that's something they need to discover on their own. Death threats and doxxing is just immature behavior imo.

There is a big difference between what someone does and says. Normally, deeds are more relevant parameter.

Some words are said in rush, without thinking too much about how the message could be received or which are weak spots that are easy to be misinterpreted. Some words are said while being in the specific state of mind maybe provoked, mad, intoxicated, etc. Ofc, healthy level of accountability and owning own s**t is a normal reaction and something to be normally expected. Tho canceling someone for saying something dumb once or even a couple of times doesn't seem as healthy at all. It speaks more of those who cling to every single word than of the one who said it.

Canceling someone for having an opinion is immature at best and kind of tragic at worse. It is killing critical thinking and questioning things. Everyone should be allowed to have an opinion, to question certain topics, to have doubts and express them, to offer different point of view. Nothing is black and white in this world and each story has at least 2 sides, quite often many sides actually. It is tragic to see that instead offering valid arguments, being open for debate and honest dialog certain groups choose insults, harassing, attempts to ruin someone's reputation (not so rare also career, social life, family life, etc.), actual irl harassing that often goes beyond the web and online platforms such as stalking, threats, doxxing, etc. It is just very malicious. Those who participate in such kind of activities should be taken accountable as well. It doesn't make sense to turn someone's 'hurt feelings' into a valid excuse for all sort of s**t. After all, someone's hard feelings shouldn't matter more that other one's actual life.

also the whole cancel culture about exposing old things people may have said is pretty dumb considering everyone has done things and said things that would be considered "offensive" today.

also social norms are always moving. at one point todays people who enjoy going around canceling people might be the ones getting cancelled later
not everyone keeps up with that anyway. personally i simply never cared about whats considered offensive. i say what i mean, thats it. some people say its problematic some don't, if we spend time feeling guilty about every single thought that crosses our minds we cant focus on the most important things. everyone isnt the same and doesnt enjoy the same things, doesnt have the same sensibility, thats why we have our own inner circles with people who we can communicate with.

most people i know would be treated like criminals by some others even though they are very respectful people in private.

also about predators. todays scandals show us that this whole witch hunt only makes predators more careful. how many male feminists are using this status and their micro fame to get access to women? we're only giving tools to be used for abuse.

some boys think they're predators when they're really vultures
