Agreeing with AuntieLice, especially on the last sentiment. Discourse is the way to solve things, but CC does nothing but silence and censor opinions which deviate from the "majority". The majority, in this case, is the groups of people who think their small corner of the internet is truly microcosmic for society in real-life, when in reality they would be shocked to learn that their bubble is just that—a bubble. When living in a bubble, nothing can come in to help you grow as a person, and nothing leaves it. As a result, you create an echo-chamber of the same opinions being thrown around with no external interaction to learn from. That is how cancel culture works, a vocal majority in a bubble attacks something they believe to be morally reprehensible, but no defence or rebuttal is considered as a consequence.

Cancel culture, the one perpetuated by leftists, is a blight on society. Those who endorse it oftentimes piggy-back onto hate trains as a way of virtue signalling or cancelling people solely because they have a fear of missing out. Take Doja Cat, for example: cancelled for allegedly not liking black people and being a slag online. No-one listened to her rebuttal and she was panned for months, when in reality the reason they cancelled her was not even rooted in any figment of truth. We should be cancelling people who deserve to be cancelled, like openly racist individuals, but instead we cancel people because they wore a Native American headdress while cosplaying as Disney's Pocahontas in 1995 when they were 3 years old. It's truly pathetic.

idk like yeah bringing up old tweets is dumb but if theyre being a nazi in those tweets its kinda like wow that person should not have a platform... also it affects women and celebs people dont like may more than say tom holland or something. people r still on jihyo and wendy's (female kpop stars) case for being racially insensitive years ago when nobody talks about all of bts saying the n-word in a performance

justice for the japanese esports pro who got cancelled for saying men under 5'7" dont deserve rights, she was right and we need more girlbosses like her
Omg, I've read about it a few months ago... Some argued that Japanese word ‘human rights’ is also a slang gamers use for some sort of equipment or gear that are considered as essential items in the game. Anyway, she got fired from the Cyclops team even she apologized multiple times.

sarah z's video on West Elm Caleb is such an interesting look at some forms of cancel culture if anyones interested!!
honestly, i think cancel culture is too broad a term. people who broadly are on board think of it as one thing, holding awful people eg racists/abusers accountable, whereas people who arent think of it as a career being destroyed because of a few tweets. the thing is that both happen, every situation is different, and having everything under this umbrella term makes it impossible to argue either way imo.

Now, let's not get crazy. The whole internet is simping for Johnny rn and Amber is the one getting canceled despite the fact that he has already lost a trial and the evidence shows him as the abuser. He was not impacted by cancel culture whatsoever since his career was long gone before the modern cancel culture became a thing.

It goes too far sometimes. Cancellation should be for actual threats. It should be about exposing dangerous people who have managed to garner a following who don't know just who they are following. Bringing up genuine issues instead of dogpiling on a trendy topic.
When you begin to bring up an edgy joke someone said when they were 12, is it really that deep?
Allow people to grow. Allow people to apologize and better themselves.
Also, realize that nothing is black and white. The internet can be a hivemind. it's important to take a step back and fully think about if the person being cancelled is truly this bad, or if the internet is making a show out of it.

you mean accountability culture? yeah it's terrible for the assholes of this world, especially the ones with the class advantages that allow them to circumvent legal repercussions for, y'know, being assholes
Nope. I mean Cancel Culture. It's called like that for a reason, otherwise it would be called differently. There is no much space left if at all for accountability is you have already canceled them. It's more like a witch-hunt, someone pointed finger at another one and said 'witch, burn her'.

Personally, I totally stand with the rest of you with my opinions on it. Some awful individuals def deserve it. But canceling shouldn't be taken so lightly. There are examples of canceled people who continued to get harassed daily, even months and years after they got canceled. Wondering what is the point of it. It serves no one.

I think people overdramatise cancel culture tbh - like sure it sucks if you said something stupid seven years ago on twitter but literally who talks about it after the couple on months? For normal people, cancel culture can hit hard, you can lose a job you rely on and friends and family, etc. you could even slide down a political pipeline bc you're so alone but like for celebrities, unless they're a nonce or vile like it doesn't rlly hurt them. James Charles could literally be argued to be a nonce and the guy is fine. Different situations differ and whatever but like idk I think most of the time people really latch onto how awful cancel culture is and pile-ons and I agree that's so toxic but i just think if ur a celeb it literally doesn't matter.

i think there are some good examples where CC has worked (eg, james charles, shane dawson), but oh my god, it can get crazy. it's a cliche but it's true - literally everyone makes mistakes. although consequences are super important, educating people and treating them with respect is always the way to go.

i think cancel culture can be beneficial when used against genuinely harmful people, but more often than not people abuse it. i’ve also noticed that it doesn’t always affect major celebs and influencers? there’s been several famous people who have been canceled but still make online content with support from their followers.

I think cancel culture can definitely be taken too far sometimes. If the person has shown repeated offenses over years and shows that they are unwilling to change or repents in a performative way, then yeah maybe they should be removed from their platform.

Importantly *cough, cough*...
It is okay to be corrected (if its done nicely at least). We should all learn to be okay with changing our ways of speaking or acting in order to be considerate to others. Everybody learns at some point, and nobody should be expected to know everything all the time.

I still stand by this! And maybe if people realized that nobody is perfect then cancel culture could take a turn into something productive instead of reductive.
