Honestly as much as I love personality tests they are annoyingly unreliable.totally but also it's fun and harmless in the same way that astrology is for some people. i think it's best for character creation and fandom culture because by definition it's built around stereotypes of what real people are like. the same way fictional characters rarely emulate real people, mbti isn't a perfect representation of the human psyche, and nor, i think, is it meant to be. it wasn't even created by students of psychology or anything like that, i mean it's based loosely on jung's work but loosely is the operative word, it's sort of just a fun way to appeal to our animal need to like sort everything into categories. like not quite on par with buzzfeed quizzes but along those same lines haha.
I mean, what is personality? Is it limited to your temperament? Which in psychology broadly refers to a set of biologically based behavioral patterns which remain largely unchanged during a person's life, far as I've understood the concept. Things such as how well or poorly a person handles stress, their impulsivity and level of caution, their level of activity, whether they are prone to taking initiative or to withdraw, how sensitive they are to sensory stimulation.
But a person's behavioral patterns are also largely affected by past experience. Negative and positive experiences create expectations which then inform our future choices and views, thus affecting our future experiences which will create new expectations for us which will inform our future choices, leading us into a constant state of change. And I imagine how difficult or easy it is to morph those expectations is a question of temperament, specifically their plasticity. Plasticity refers to the brain's ability to change, to form new neural pathways and to re-wire existing ones. Plasticity is why children learn faster than adults, because their brains essentially have more plasticity and are able to change and adapt quicker. So that's yet another part in the huge mix of Stuff In Your Brain that ultimately creates the whole of our personality.
And this is without getting into information, emotions, how emotions affect how we ingest information, opinions, traumas etc.
In summary, personality tests are fun but wildly inconsistent, especially because some people have more inconsistent personalities than others. It's impossible to realiably record something so unstatic as personality under the assumption that it will stay static. I think the most reliable personality test would be a temperament focused one, but I'm not sure if even temperament is that unchanging.
Side note: Anyone should not take any of the psychological mumbo jumbo I've mentioned here as fact. It is based on information I have gathered myself and there is no reason for you to trust that my knowledge is fact. There is always the possibility that I have misread information or straight up read misinformation, and if the subject matter is interesting to you you should do your own research and form your own opinions based on that. For me it's like a hobby? I think this is interesting but I am not an expert nor someone who should be considered a realiable source of information.
