I was a very lucky child  having a mother like I did.  She used clothes as a tool, and I think that carried over to me.  Attitude can be conveyed with style.

I was always told that it didn't matter what I looked like or what I wore, it's what's inside that counts. As my life progressed I very soon learned that this was not true. In other people's opinion how you look and present yourself matters a lot. You can get a job by having the correct outfit, attract a partner, make social connections etc. The statement that first impressions count is an applicable one. This is something I found difficult to accept since my upbringing was so much about how I didn't need to have clothes to earn a respectable place in life. Now I can see that my parents told me this to make up for the fact that they couldn't afford to buy me fashionable outfits and I had to wear whatever was available. Because of this I've always found the fashion industry to be a place of mystery and something I've struggled to associate myself with. I want to know more about fashion and it's attributes but I've never known where to start. Lack of knowledge on this subject is quite an isolating sensation.

Lately, I've been surrounded by people who cares a lot (and by a lot, I mean A LOT) about being fashionable and who pretend that everybody else has to be fashionable too. Judging people by their looks, knowing nothing about them!! hmm.. too superficial.

In my case, I'm pretty classic and simple. My problem is that "classic" and "simple" is always far away from what is trendy at any time. It's hard to find classic stuff in stores here. I guess the majority buys all the fashionable stuff. There must be something I don't get or don't see on that.

Just out of curiosity, I visit a lot of online clothing stores, to get ideas for my bimbo.  The result is a lot of banner ads for clothing.  One just caught my eye, and I thought I'd ask the question:
Would you wear fashionable clothing from a store offering rental outfits?

I cringed when I read that advertisement for that service, directed towards larger sized clothing and clients.  Surely everything is washed and such, but I just don't think I could personally wear the clothes someone else had already worn. I can see the value in the service, as plus size clothing does seem to cost much more than the sizes I can buy on discount racks but still, are they really saving money with shipping and time?
Why was it so much more easy for me to wrap my mind around wearing a rented wedding dress but never, everyday type clothes.  I would feel to me like I was borrowing clothes from a thrift shop.

My initial reaction when I read your post HeavenLeigh was 'Blegh! No. Just... No.' After I fully digested the information I was still shuddering at the thought.
Renting everyday clothes, no matter how 'plus size' I might get is something I couldn't bring myself to do. I think I'd (fruitlessly) attempt to make my own clothing rather than rent it. I completely get the aversion to the idea. When it comes to renting clothing like a wedding dress, it is easier to accept simply because that dress is only worn for one day (and a couple more times for dress rehearsals etc, but that's not a full day), the same as a fancy dress shops costumes. You wear them once then take them back. Everyday clothes will be worn repetitively by someone and that's when an item of clothing starts to become personal to said person. From my experience when having washed some of my clothes or my families clothing they still sometimes smell like the person who has worn them. Not a bad smell per se but a smell of that person. A personal scent if you will. So even when washed clothing can sometimes still carry that fragrance and that make it so much worse to think about. It would feel like using someone else's tooth brush. Icky. I'm not prudish when it comes to wearing second hand clothing. I do browse charity shops (I think they are the English equivalent of thrift stores) and I do buy some things from them (mainly bags and shoes and toys for my toddler to destroy within seconds because he is a human wrecking ball). However if I see something nice I will buy it, but if it is actual clothing I will practically boil wash it before I put it on my body. Yeah, renting everyday clothes, that is a big NO Thank you!

I could understand renting clothes if you are low income and you need to wear something nice for say a job interview, but I just couldn't imagine being comfortable in clothes that aren't my own. I typically wear black and white, with small touches of colour added by jewelry or accessories, so I pretty much rotate only a few different actual clothing pieces for every outfit. When I buy something new, I can't get comfortable in it until I've worn it around a bit, and it really feels like my own. It's not even a matter of being worried about germs, but more just that I wouldn't feel like me.

OK what exactly are these catwalk designs meant to be representing. Fine I can appreciate that fashion is a form of art and art can be anything. I mean literally anything (I went to a gallery and there was a scrunched up tissue. That was the exhibit. Just... Huh!?) What everyday fashions can be taken from these creations? How can having a pile of broken wood for a head be considered edgy and stylish? Maybe I'm just narrow minded and I should 'get with the times', but I can't take this stuff seriously. Lady Gaga and Katie Perry are one thing (pop icons dressing weirdly to attract attention and for publicity stunts) but this... What in the Hell IS this!? I don't look at this and say Ooo that's risqué or wow how kookie and unique. I mainly think, aww that five year old made their own costume for the school play... Oh wait. That's a model.

Haute couture! Runway trends are so weird and impractical when viewed as clothing, but as sculptures, and artistic statements, I think some are quite nice. I mean, the eggs? Man, breakfast is something I can get behind!

I think the driftwood costume is truly symbolic; it calls out to all lost souls that have been outcast by today's society. The red sheet shows embarrassment, yet this chronic need to be recognized as an individual. The plastic ball costume shows that, even if you forgot to take a ball to the local swimming pool, your kids can still play... with you! The breakfast outfit probably symbolises a hankering for transfats.  Now I'm hungry, God analysing fashion is hard!
