From French folklore, I've chosen to do l'Ankou-
Hailing from Celtic mythology, this figure is said to be the servant of Death and was feared in Brittany. He is depicted as a skeleton, sometimes draped in a black cloak and holding a scythe, an arrow or a spear. Legends say he rides a wagon with creaking wheels at night to collect the souls of dead people. If you hear the wheels or see this sinister cart, it means you or a loved one will die soon.

Rusałka are from Polish (and other Slavic cultures') folklore. They were said to be unmarried women who drowned and now lure men to the water to drown them. Other than drowning men, Rusałki also enjoy singing, dancing, and swinging from tree branches. Polish women used to hang scarves from branches as gifts in hopes of preventing the Rusałki from killing their men. There is also a week in early June called Rusałka Week or Trinity Week where the women leave the forests to damage crops and spread death and illness. Incense, garlic, wormwood, and blessing oneself with the sign of the cross were ways of protecting yourself during this time.

the legend of loira do banheiro (blonde girl of the bathroom) originated from the real life story of maria augusta de oliveira borges, who died in 1891 at the age of 26. her death certificate disappeared, leaving the causa mortis unknown. ten years after her death, a public school was built where her house (where her remains had been buried) used to be. naturally, rumours about the young lady's spirit roaming across the school corridors, and specially the bathrooms, quickly spread. the legend gained strenght after a fire, of which the cause was never discovered, burned down part of the building. after the incident the story spread across many schools across brazil, gaining elements of the bloody mary legend. it is said that to summon the ghost one must call her three times in front of a mirror, say swear words, slam the bathroom's door, throw three strands of hair in the toilet and flush three times with all the lights off. she is described as a blonde young lady dressed in white with pieces of cotton tucked on her nose, ears and mouth.

loira do banheiro was my santa claus. when i did the complete ritual in the school bathroom and she didn't show up, i was devastated. even though she's a somewhat frightening figure, for me she's a comforting memory of simple and joyful times. there was also a legend at the school i attended at that age (7 to 10 years old) that said that it used to be a cemetery, so i used to spend most of my recess digging in the playground sand looking for remains. i've always been a fan of scary stories lol /i actually made this look a few weeks ago, but i decided to share it instead of making another brazilian character because she has an important meaning to me :')

The Black-Eyed Child of Cannock Chase.
The ancient woodland of Cannock Chase in Staffordshire, England, is home to many stories of the strange and mysterious including; UFO's, werewolves, big cats, giant snakes, a Bigfoot, and a Pig-Headed Man, but since the 1980's there have also been multiple sightings of a young girl with entirely black eyes.
Two teens camping in the area in 2021 claim to have been stalked by her in the night when they heard footsteps and childish gigging outside the tent, and peeking outside they saw her moving in ways unlike a human, transporting from tree to tree.
She is said by some to be the otherworldly spirit of a girl who lost her life in the area in the 1960's!

this one is a well-known local myth for me, the cottingley fairies!

way back in 1917, a series of 5 photographs were taken of two young girls that depicted them with 'real' fairies! though these photos have been debunked in time, i grew up hearing tales about the cottingley fairies from my grandmother and swiftly fell in love with the idea of real fairies! i spend my childhood looking for them, obsessed with any fairy-themed media, and while i don't think that they're real anymore i still adore the concept of these tiny magic people who live alongside us! but who knows, they could still be real, after all... :)

a banshee (/ˈbænʃiː/ ban-shee; modern irish bean sí, from old irish: ben síde [bʲen ˈʃiːðʲe], "woman of the fairy mound" or "fairy woman") is a female spirit in irish folklore who heralds the death of a family member, usually by screaming, wailing, shrieking, or keening.

i've been thinking about making a banshee for a long time. the exact moment i saw the invitation to the contest she was the first folklore character i thought of, but she's not part of my culture (or at least, as far as i know, i'm not of irish descent). but i made her anyway and wanted to share <3 (just an extra, not the main)

Loving reading everyone's entries! I'm scared to go to bed now thanks a lot :P

Probably the most popular folklore in my neck of the woods is The Bell Witch. I think most people from my area know the story of the Bell Witch haunting in the form of an oral history. My great grandmother had some family from up near Adams, Tennessee where the haunting took place in the early 19th century. I remember she spoke to me about this haunting like she really believed it, and there was almost this fear that the spirit would hear her and find her. She told me there were instances of the haunting reaching her kinfolk who lived in the area.

The Bell Witch wasn’t really a witch- she was (is?) a poltergeist: a disturbed spirit able to travel far distances, speak, and physically move things. She haunted the home of the Bell family for several years and was determined to kill the father John Bell, and she haunted all them up until he died. But people claim the site of the home and the general area is haunted to this day. The children of the family were physically beaten by the spirit. Their beds shaken and the blankets torn off of them in the night. And the spirit terrorized one of the daughters until she agreed to break off her engagement, and she nearly went crazy from he heartbreak.

Anyway- that’s what I recall of the general story of the Bell Witch haunting. I’ve always imagined the spirit sort of resembles Miss Havisham from Great Expectations. But more country, like a "go out back and find me a switch" type lady.

The White Lady !

Folklore of the white lady who appears in castles, forests everywhere in France and even in the Germanic countries, certainly also in Europe. White women are pretty famous all over the world :)

The white lady always appears dressed in white, her appearance is visible in the same places most often. She is like a messenger at the crossroads.
In France, the white lady is best known as a young hitchhiker, you can even see her disappear suddenly !
The white lady is said to be a woman who died in a car accident at an intersection and since then, she wanders, haunts and alerts on the road, the car drivers.
When the white lady appears to humans, she can rush towards them and pass through their bodies, their cars.
If you take the white lady hitchhiking, your life will be saved but if you leave her by the side of the road, you risk causing a terrible car accident !

This is my favorite contest prompt! Love seeing everyone's looks and learning a bit about their cultures ❤︎₊ ⊹

Saranchips

My look is inspired by the Greek myth of Artemis and the stag.

Artemis is the ancient Greek goddess of (among other things) childbirth, wild animals and the hunt. In Greek mythology she's usually accompanied by a band of nymphs. One of my favorite myths involves Artemis getting revenge on a man who disrespected her. The story goes that, as Artemis and the nymphs bathed in the woods one night, a mortal hunter named Aecton stumbled across them. He was mesmerized by their beauty and hid to watch them in secret. When Artemis noticed, she was outraged. To punish him for the violation, she turned him into a stag (male deer). Aecton ran away, but he was pursued and devoured by his own hunting dogs.

I love a good revenge tale, and stories about women protecting themselves are especially important to me! ❤︎₊ ⊹
