“They ask you about intoxicants and gambling. Say, "In them is GREAT SIN and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit………" (Al Quran# 2:219).
So, intoxicants and gambling are not only sins but great sins; hence it is forbidden, according to the definition of prohibition stated in Verse 7:33 mentioned above.
In Verse 2:219, God says that it has some benefits as well. So people take this Verse lightly - casually. But one has to remember that all the sins have attractions and some instant benefits associated with them. That’s why people feel the temptation to commit sins which are Satan’s work to lure us. Due to these instant benefits, one must not undermine the gravity of sins associated with the consumption of intoxicants.
Hence Verse 2:219 is the conclusive Verse prohibiting the consumption of intoxicants because, in this Verse, God declares that it is a Great Sin.
But men rarely comply with God’s commandments instantly – especially when the problem is deep-rooted. Hence God repeats His reminders in multiple places in the Quran in various ways. So, the other verses relating to intoxicants are complementary - reminder and confirmation to the Verse of prohibition – Verse 2:219. Here is the other Verse to ponder:
“O you who believe! Intoxicants, games of chance, sacrifices to idols and divination by arrows are a loathsome evil of Satan’s doing; so turn wholly away from it so that you may prosper.” (Al Quran # 5:90)
