Let's all agree that people who devote a significant amount of their time to hating on the interests of others for no good reason are boring af and thoroughly terrible all around

Probably gonna get hate for this but most emo kids today try way too damn hard to be edgy and will never rock it as hard as the effortless OGs did in 2005-2010. Also half the point of that whole scene was the sense of rebellion, individuality, and community that came along with belonging to a marginalized subculture, now that all things "alternative" are actually mainstream af it just doesn't feel as sincere idk. Maybe I'm just getting old. This must be how 80s punkers felt when Green Day hit the bigtime and everyone started going around thinking they were hardcore
OG emo was dramatic and edgy but the subculture was formed in direct response to the way society at large treats mental illness and just negative feelings in general and thats why so much of it was about dark imagery and being sad and wanting to die and shit, but it was more like 'im sad and i suck but so do you and thats okay lets put it on a t-shirt'

nowadays emo is just like...... I'm Not Like Other Girls-ass shit, trying to be different for the sake of being different. thats bad counter-culture and theres no substance to it. also the music sux

YAS thank you! Could not have said it better myself. This is exactly what I meant when I said all the sincerity seemed to be gone - if half the point of that seen was the sense of individuality and rebellion, the other half was absolutely about spitting in the face of societal stigma against the mentally ill and embracing our screwed-up depressive selves in spite of all our faults <3 The only "new" music I like that could be considered even remotely emo (I put new in quotes bc they've actually been going since like 2010) is Twenty One Pilots, they're super raw and poetic and real. The rest of that poser shit can go suck a fuck.

high key disagree tbh top is exactly what i was talking about when i mentioned new emo. rampant appropriation of mental illness (lyrics abt voices in your head, calling their music 'schizoid pop' on their website at one point) and dumb melodrama and angst without any of the upturns or radical self acceptance, just... pretentious 'we're not like other people' shit

Ehh, their lead singer Tyler Joseph has actually opened up about his mental health struggles, suicidal ideations, self-harm struggles etc. so while the lyrics might come off as cliche to you I can almost guarantee they're coming from a sincere place. Tyler writes all his own lyrics and definitely isn't trying to capitalize on the misery of others for the sake of pure profit. If anything, he seems to genuinely want to offer solace and solidarity to those who have faced unfortunate experiences similar to his own. I've seen them in concert three times and the level of connection and engagement he offers the audience is amazing - not something I've seen from a lot of bands, and I've seen a lot of bands. Lol. Also their stuff that's made it to the Top 40 can't hold a candle to some of their more older, more obscure work (like it is with many artists). Stressed Out and Heathens are one kinda canned and mediocre, but songs like Isle of Flightless BirdsA Car A Torch A DeathForest, Kitchen Sink, and Guns for Hands are imo pure lyrical mastery and reach a level of introspective depth not many artists strive to hit. Just my opinion though, to each their own and if you don't like them that's 100% your jam, but I really don't think they're anywhere near as shallow and insincere as you've made them out to be and will always step in to defend one of my favorite newer bands.

Also could you maybe find a source in which TOP actually refers to themselves as "Schizoid Pop"? I did a little digging and could find nothing about either band member actually dubbing their own music that, mostly just blogs news articles etc. If they did I won't disagree that it's problematic, but I've been a fan since 2014 (about two years before they hit the mainstream) and have never once seen them referred to as such until you just mentioned it. Maybe it was years ago and he came to realize that the term was offensive, realized his mistake and stopped using it, idk. If so I won't hold it against them, yes it's wildly inappropriate to name a musical style after a legitimate mental illness but as long as they realized they were in the wrong and grew up a little, eh. We've all been politically incorrect at one point or another. As long as the offending party wasn't making a legitimate and intentional effort to spread bigotry/blind hate and learned and grew from their mistakes, it's not exactly an unforgivable sin.
