the opinion is likely to vary person-by-person but solid-color/non-patterned clothing in neutral tones can be very effective depending on their usage. then again i know little to nothing about fashion in practice. sometimes having too many colors or patterns (or even the same pattern all throughout) is too garish, which can be a good thing depending on what you're going for.

i feel like basic/neutral colours are more popular these days. iirc fashion used to be a lot more colorful in the 90's and early 2000's, now i mostly see people wear all black, neutral or a colorful top with dark jeans etc. of course everyone is unique and if you really look around everyone uses color in their fashion in different ways :)

Well. I pretty much only wear all black so I think it's fine. I have a few colorful pieces but I reserve them as work clothes.

my wardrobe is entirely black & white bc i like it that way & it makes planning looks muuuuuch easier for me lol. but it really depends from person to person though bc some people can work all sorts of hues/tones really well. i personally think keeping a very restricted colour palette just makes my life easier bc everything matches & looks good together. my biggest colour pet peeve is mixing dark/dull tones with black pieces bc those don't really go together imo

to be honest, i always prefer individual items that are rather colorful (with the exception of printed t-shirts, of bands, shows, etc. which i always have in black - and i have a lot of those).
neutral colors can be styled very well, and they totally look good, but personally i find them pretty limiting.

i think that a high quality neutral is, like, the sharpest thing u can wear. you ever seen a well-constructed, sexy all-black ensemble and start sweating due its sexiness and sleekness? that's the goal

it's ENTIRELY dependent on the vibes and aesthetics you're going for, where you're going, what you're doing, etc... like an ultracolorful neon fairy kei kawaii look can slay just as much as that tight black dress w/ the matte lipstick and the gold hoops and fur coat can. you have to know who your "audience" will be and know what you feel and look best in and combine those two things to create the right look. fashion is just so subjective and situational that you can't rule out one over another.

tbh, both are good! as an Art Student(TM) i can see the appeal either way ...

if you dress in bright, saturated colors you'll definitely be the center of attention, and if you put together something good you'll almost always get complimented on it! like, i have a red trenchcoat and EVERY time i've gone out in it, someone has complimented me on it.

on the other hand, even dressing in stark black-and-white can look really crisp and still catch attention, but it's more "official" and can be hard to keep clean. i also really love patterns in black-and-white, especially checkered patterns.

also, de-saturated or "generic" colors can look really good too, if they're put together properly ... personally i like things like khaki pants combined with a green shirt! you just have to find the stuff that balances out or work together :)
