So I'm switching schools soon (in March/April) and I'm really excited as I'll now be allowed to dye my hair "unnatural" colours (I've only dyed it light brown and lighter brown). However, I'm quite afraid of bleaching my hair, and I have to as my natural hair colour is dark brown/black. The prices for salons in Singapore are insane anyway. And as people usually do on the internet, I stumbled upon something new.

You can lighten hair naturally with lemon juice?!

There's even a Wikihow article explaining how to do it. These are supposedly the results of someone who tried it.

Have any of you tried it before? Is it super damaging and is it actually effective? And do you think you would change your hair colour soon?

I used to use lemon juice as a teen. My hair has a ginger base, but is a little darker. Lemon worked, but the yellow colour it turned into was weird lol, probably for the carrot colour base. It happens to me with dyes too. It never works as I want :p But, brown hair is a totally diffirent world! In the pics looks pretty good.

I'm an absolute bleach addict.
I first went blonde back in 2011 using a hair dye kit in a box at home, but it sort of ruined my hair and my boyfriend at the time didn't like it, so I went back to mousey brown. After we broke up, I dip dyed my hair a dark turquoise green, and then dyed it all the same colour temporarily for a bit of fun. After that I bleached it to light blonde so I could spend the whole of summer 2012 with pink hair. That was pretty fun but high maintenance, so I went back to being a bleach blonde again. It took a lot of time and trying out different things for me to achieve the healthy condition grey/white blonde hair colour I have now. Roots were always a problem, because I would tone my hair at home, and the freshly bleached roots would be a bit brassy and yellow compared to the rest of my hair. I stopped trusting my housemate to bleach my roots, and started going to a really cool salon in London which specialises in bleach and unnatural hair colours. The girl who does my hair there is an absolute expert in the exact hair colour I have :)

If you want to go lighter I'd generally say always, always go to a professional. It's worth it when you're not ruining your own hair, ending up with embarrassing undesirable brassy tones and potentially missing bits out. But if salons are too expensive in Singapore, maybe try the lemon juice method first and see if you get the results you want.

Lightening from dark might be harmful for your hair. I did that years ago and my hair got much shorter even I did not go to hairdressers. Some folks use honey masks or chamomille tea rinses for whitening, then there are some other natural ways for that.

Naturally I'm a sandy-blond, like the after photo the opening poster showed, using Lemon Juice.  I must say I'm interested even if it turned a weird yellow after time.  As long as it didn't permanently damage the hair.  I'm afraid that it would, because of the acidity of lemon juice.  It would be an interest thing to hear a comment from a chemist about the long term effects.

I do dye my hair. Revlon #02  Or Garnier Nutrisse 100.  The lightest color possible without bleach.  My hair takes the light color very well, and I don't get the typical growth rings of darker hair, after a week or two.  I go a few months between dyes, and consider myself fortunate.  What I want to try is to go darker, but I'm to frightened to try it.  My hair is very long, and if I had to start all over to be a blond again, I would be devastated.  I want to dye my hair a deep Burgundy color  with stops at a real bright red, like Karen Gillan.  So I really wonder if you can return to a natural light color, after going to such a dark color.  I just haven't dare try it,  but I think I'll do a test on some hair from my brush and find out.

I love the idea of coloring my hair but I can't do it, I bleached my hair once (highlights) and they all broke off. So needless to say, I'm staying away from bleach for the rest of my life. I used to dye my hair black and light brown , but I haven't in about 2 years and my hair is so much happier !

The one thing I will say about using the lemon juice is that it may not lift very pretty. Box color (which is horrible for your hair) may come out great on your friend and then you try it and it looks hideous. Its different person to person. So you still may need to go into a salon to get it toned, or buy something to tone it yourself and risk it coming out not so great.
Second, any sort of lifting or bleaching of the hair is going to damage it to an extent. No matter if its the lemon juice or bleach. I suggest finding an Aveda salon in Singapore where you live. Our bleach is infused with oils that help to moisturize while lifting to decrease damage. If your hair is virgin hair color they may even be able to do some high lift color(Our color is 97% naturally derived). Also! To decrease maintenance (since you said its so expensive there) you could ask for balyage. It may be more expensive the first visit because of the technique but it is less maintenance over time! You wont be in there constantly getting your roots touched up. So I do suggest going into a salon just so you can really get the results you want and something pretty (: I work with Aveda color and I have seen clients come on that have done their color at home or with a non aveda salon and the condition of their hair really changes after switching to Aveda.

Thank you guys so much for all your responses!

I'm glad to hear it does work, but I'm a bit apprehensive about doing it since many people mentioned the damaging effects. That is so scary to hear, icekream! I would like to stay away from dyes but I get white hairs even though I'm only 18. I guess I don't have enough melanin, or my hair is too thick or something. Thank you for that great advice too, Rocco! Maybe I'll look around and start saving up. Low-maintenance is definitely a plus but I don't know if I'd like to spend so much on the first time.
